Celebrating Black Women Poets: A Literary Salon

Join us for an evening celebrating Washington’s powerful yet often overlooked role in the Harlem Renaissance at The Whittemore House. This Women’s History Month Literary Salon will bring together history, scholarship, and conversation in the very neighborhood where poet Georgia Douglas Johnson once hosted some of the most important Black writers of the early twentieth century. Don’t miss this opportunity to experience DC’s literary legacy in an intimate and historic setting.

Poet and scholar Brian Gilmore will discuss his acclaimed book, No More Worlds to Conquer: The Black Poet in Washington, DC, illuminating the profound influence of Black poets in Washington on American literature. He will be joined in conversation by veteran journalist Marcia Davis, followed by a discussion on women’s role in shaping DC’s literary community and cultural canon.

Wednesday, March 18, 2026. Salon begins at 5:30 pm. Admission is $25 and includes hors d’oeuvres; cash bar available. The first 30 ticket purchasers will receive a $5 discount on the featured book.
